Only crop photos you are allowed to use, of adults who consented. “Use as reference” keeps the image in your browser’s studio draft; it is uploaded only if you later generate a video. If it does not appear, download the JPEG and upload it in the studio.
The best TikTok video size is 1080×1920 pixels, a 9:16 vertical frame that fills the phone screen. TikTok also accepts smaller 9:16 files: its ads specifications ask for at least 540×960 pixels for vertical video, and 720×1280 plays fine. Horizontal 16:9 and square 1:1 are accepted too, but they appear with large empty bands in the For You feed, so crop to 9:16 whenever the scene allows it.
For files, TikTok’s ads help center lists MP4, MOV, MPEG, 3GP and AVI, up to 500 MB and up to 10 minutes for in-feed ads. For regular posts, TikTok rolled out 10-minute uploads in 2022 and has since tested longer uploads for some accounts; 10 minutes is the limit you can count on everywhere. Check the upload screen of your app for your account’s exact limit.
TikTok places the caption, sounds, profile picture and like, comment and share buttons over the bottom and the right side of the video. Keep faces, text and important details in the upper-middle part of the frame. The Reels safe-zone overlay in the crop tool (14% top, 35% bottom, 6% sides) is a good conservative guide for TikTok too.
Cropping before you post also protects quality. When TikTok receives a landscape or square file it scales it down to fit the vertical player, so the subject appears small with bands around it. A photo cropped to 9:16 at 1080×1920 uses every pixel of the screen, and an AI video generated from it keeps the same full-screen framing.
Use the crop tool above to frame a photo at 9:16; it runs entirely in your browser and nothing is uploaded. Download the JPEG, or press “Use as reference in SpicyFrame” to put it in the studio draft. SpicyFrame turns it into a 9:16 MP4 of 5, 10 or 30 seconds with native sound, ready to post on TikTok.
